Sunset Ombre Egg Rattle Doll Free Knit Pattern

Introduction

This little egg rattle is the perfect first colorwork toy: a smooth, rounded egg knit in the round from the bottom up, with soft fair isle bands that fade from coral through peach, pink, and magenta into plum, like a sunset caught in yarn. It is designed for advanced beginners who are comfortable with knit, purl, and simple increases and decreases, and who want to try a little stranded colorwork on a small, forgiving project. At about 4 inches (10 cm) tall, it fits neatly in a baby's hand, and the gentle rattle inside gives it a soft, satisfying sound. Knit in sport weight cotton, it feels smooth, light, and sturdy, and the little coral handle loop at the top makes it easy to grab, hang, or tie to a stroller.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Sport weight (CYC 2) cotton, approximately 50 yards each of 5 colors: A = coral (#FF6F61), B = peach (#FFA07A), C = pink (#FF69B4), D = magenta (#C71585), E = plum (#8B008B). Total yardage about 250 yards.
  • Needles: 3.25 mm (US 3) double-pointed needles (set of 4), or a circular needle if you prefer magic loop.
  • Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, small plastic rattle insert (or a securely sealed container with beads), scissors.
  • Finished size: Approximately 4 inches (10 cm) tall and 3 inches (7.5 cm) wide.

Abbreviations

  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • k: knit
  • kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch (makes one new stitch)
  • k2tog: knit two stitches together (decreases by one)
  • R / Rnd: round (one full pass around the work in the round)
  • I-cord: a small knitted tube made by sliding stitches to the other end of the needle and knitting them again
  • sc: single crochet (used only for the optional edging)

Gauge

26 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Knit a small swatch in the round and measure a 4-inch section; if you have more stitches than 26, go up a needle size, and if you have fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Plan your color bands first. The written rounds below do not assign colors, so decide before you cast on which rounds get B, C, D, and E. A simple plan is to work R1–R12 in A, then switch to B, C, D, and E in bands of about 4 rounds each as you work up the egg, so the fade runs coral at the bottom to plum at the top.
  • Keep your floats loose. When you carry a color across the back, stretch the work slightly as you go so the egg does not pucker. Because the egg is small, you can also knit each band in a single color and simply change colors at the start of a round.
  • Insert the rattle before the top closes. The opening at R29 is your only chance, so have the rattle insert ready and check that it is secure and smooth before you pull the last stitches tight.
  • Stuff lightly. A small amount of fiberfill around the rattle keeps the egg round without muffling the sound; do not overstuff, or the shaping will look lumpy.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Body (worked in the round from the bottom up)

With A, cast on 6 sts. Divide evenly on 3 dpns (2 sts per needle). Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.

R1: kfb in each st (12 sts).

R2: [k1, kfb] around (18 sts).

R3: [k2, kfb] around (24 sts).

R4: [k3, kfb] around (30 sts).

R5: [k4, kfb] around (36 sts).

R6: [k5, kfb] around (42 sts).

R7: [k6, kfb] around (48 sts).

R8: [k7, kfb] around (54 sts).

R9: [k8, kfb] around (60 sts).

R10–12: knit (60 sts). This is the widest part of the egg; this is a good place to begin your color changes for the ombre fade.

R13: [k8, k2tog] around (54 sts).

R14: knit (54 sts).

R15: [k7, k2tog] around (48 sts).

R16: knit (48 sts).

R17: [k6, k2tog] around (42 sts).

R18: knit (42 sts).

R19: [k5, k2tog] around (36 sts).

R20: knit (36 sts).

R21: [k4, k2tog] around (30 sts).

R22: knit (30 sts).

R23: [k3, k2tog] around (24 sts).

R24: knit (24 sts).

R25: [k2, k2tog] around (18 sts).

R26: knit (18 sts).

R27: [k1, k2tog] around (12 sts).

R28: knit (12 sts).

R29: [k2tog] around (6 sts). Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining 6 sts and pull tight. Do not fasten off yet; use the tail to secure the rattle inside before closing completely.

Rattle

Before closing the top completely, insert a small plastic rattle insert (or a securely sealed container with beads) into the body through the opening. Add a small amount of fiberfill around it if desired, then pull the yarn tail tight to close the top and secure the rattle in place.

Handle Loop

With A, pick up 3 sts at the top center of the egg. Work I-cord for 2 inches (5 cm): knit the 3 sts, then slide them to the other end of the needle and knit them again, repeating until the cord measures 2 inches. Bind off. Fold the cord into a loop and sew the ends securely to the top of the egg.

Edging (optional)

With A, work a round of single crochet (sc) around the handle loop for a clean finish, if desired. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly and Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends on the wrong side, changing direction a few times so the ends stay secure inside the toy. Sew the handle loop firmly to the top center with a few extra stitches, since it will be pulled and tugged. Gently shape the egg with your fingers, then block lightly by misting with water and letting it air-dry in shape; do not soak the rattle insert. Check that the rattle is fully enclosed and that no small parts or loose ends can work free before giving the toy to a child.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Make a set: knit several eggs in different sunset palettes, or reverse the fade so plum sits at the bottom and coral at the top.
  • Add texture: work a few of the plain knit rounds in purl (reverse stockinette) to create subtle ridges between the color bands.
  • Skip the rattle for a keepsake: leave out the insert and stuff the egg fully for a soft, silent ornament, or hang it from the loop as an Easter decoration.
