Four-Petal Motif Halter Bralette: Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

This halter bralette is made from a simple grid of small four-petal flower motifs, joined into a flat front panel and finished with a chain neck tie and a straight back band. It is a lovely project for anyone who has mastered basic stitches and wants to try motif joining and Irish-lace-inspired texture without complicated shaping. The lilac bamboo-cotton yarn gives it a soft, earthy, neutral look, and the open lacy flowers make it light and airy for warm days. Worn under a loose top or on its own at the beach, it feels gentle against the skin and drapes beautifully.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Sport weight (CYC 2) bamboo cotton, 50% bamboo / 50% cotton, 250 yd (229 m) per 100 g skein — 1 skein in lilac (all parts use the same color).
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (US E/4).
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, stitch markers, scissors, rust-proof pins for blocking.
  • Finished size: To fit bust 34–36 in (86–91 cm); front panel 15 in (38 cm) wide and 7.5 in (19 cm) tall; back band 15 in (38 cm) long.

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook.
  • sl st — slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • dc — double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops twice.
  • sp — space: the gap formed by a chain.
  • WS — wrong side: the back face of the work.
  • st(s) — stitch(es).

Gauge

One motif measures 2.5 in (6.35 cm) square after blocking. Work one motif, block it lightly, and measure across to check before making the full set of 18.

Tips Before You Start

  • Make all 18 motifs first and block them to the same size so the panel stays square and even.
  • Keep your tension loose and consistent in the petals; tight dc stitches make the flowers pucker.
  • Lay the motifs out in the 3-by-6 grid before joining so you can flip any that look uneven.
  • Join seams with a relaxed sl st — pulling them tight will shrink the panel below 15 in wide.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Four-Petal Motif (make 18)

Set-up: With lilac, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

R1: Ch 1, [sc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3] in ring 4 times, join with sl st to first sc (4 petals). Fasten off.

Joining the Motifs

Arrange the 18 motifs in 3 rows of 6. Join with sl st seams: hold two motifs WS together and sl st through the corresponding ch-3 sps and dc sts. Join all motifs horizontally first, then join the rows vertically to form the panel.

Edging

R1: With lilac, join yarn at the top right corner of the panel. Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire panel, working 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Neck Ties

With lilac, join yarn at the top left corner of the panel, ch 80, fasten off. Repeat at the top right corner for the second tie.

Back Band

Set-up: With lilac, ch 61.

R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (60 sts).

R2–4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (60 sts). Fasten off.

Assembly and Finishing

Sew the ends of the back band to the side edges of the panel at underarm level, using the tapestry needle and matching yarn. Weave in all ends neatly on the wrong side. Block lightly: pin the panel and band to measurements, mist with water, and let dry flat so the motifs open up and the panel reaches 15 in (38 cm) wide.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Add a second color for the edging and ties to make the flower panel stand out.
  • For a larger fit, add one more row of motifs to the panel and lengthen the back band by chaining extra stitches in multiples that keep it even.
  • Work a row of sc along each neck tie for a sturdier, non-stretching cord.
