Ice Blue Honeycomb Wedge Cushion Knit Free Pattern

Introduction

This plump triangular wedge cushion is a little piece of retro-future living room magic: one face is a cool, plain silver, and the other is an ice blue honeycomb cable that looks like it belongs on a space station sofa. It is knit flat as two simple rectangles, then folded and seamed into a wedge, so the clever shaping does all the work for you. It is written for an experienced cable knitter who is comfortable reading a chart-free cable sequence and working mattress stitch. Finished, it is firm, generous and about 20 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 14 inches tall, perfect as a floor pouf or a statement early Christmas gift.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (CYC 4) cotton, approx 20 sts/4 in. Color A (ice blue): 480 yd. Color B (silver): 480 yd. Total approx 960 yd.
  • Needles: 4.5 mm (US 7) straight needles.
  • Cable needle: 4.5 mm cable needle.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, tape measure, toy filling for stuffing.
  • Finished size: Approx 20 in wide x 20 in deep x 14 in tall wedge; each rectangle is 20 in x 30 in before folding.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • st(s): stitch(es).
  • st st: stockinette stitch (knit on right side rows, purl on wrong side rows).
  • rib: ribbing, here k1 p1 (knit 1, purl 1).
  • C4B: cable 4 back: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold at back, k2, then knit the 2 sts from the cable needle.
  • C4F: cable 4 front: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold at front, k2, then knit the 2 sts from the cable needle.
  • rep: repeat.
  • BO: bind off.

Gauge

20 sts and 28 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette on 4.5 mm needles, blocked. Knit a swatch, block it, and measure a 4 in section across the middle to check your stitch and row counts before you begin.

Tips Before You Start

  • Block both panels to exactly 20 in x 30 in before folding; the wedge shape depends on both rectangles matching.
  • Count your cable groups after every cable row: you should always have the same number of 8-stitch groups separated by 2 purl stitches.
  • Use a cable needle one size smaller if your crossings feel loose, and keep the cable needle at the back or front exactly as written.
  • Stuff firmly and evenly in small handfuls so the wedge holds its 14 in height without lumps.

Blocking and Folding Both Panels

Block both panels to 20 in x 30 in. Fold each panel in half crosswise (to 20 in x 15 in), right sides out; the fold forms the top ridge.

Assembly

Place the honeycomb panel and plain panel back to back, matching folded edges. Seam the two short side edges of each folded panel (4 seams total) with mattress stitch in matching color, leaving a 6 in gap on one bottom edge.

Stuffing and Closing

Stuff firmly with toy filling to a plump wedge, approx 14 in tall. Close the gap with mattress stitch.

Edging

With Color A, pick up and knit 1 st per st around the bottom perimeter (approx 160 sts), join in the round.

Rnds 1-4: k1 p1 rib (approx 160 sts).

BO in rib.

Assembly and Finishing

Work all four short side seams with mattress stitch, matching yarn color to panel, and keep the seam tension even so the ridge stays crisp. Leave the 6 in gap on one bottom edge for stuffing, then close it with mattress stitch after filling. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, following the direction of the stitches so they do not pull. Lightly steam-block the finished cushion, especially the honeycomb face and the ribbed edging, and let it dry fully before use.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap Color B for a deep charcoal or cream to change the retro-futuristic mood while keeping the same gauge.
  • Add a zippered or buttoned inner lining bag for the filling so the cushion can be re-stuffed or washed more easily.
  • Work the edging in Color B instead of A for a contrasting base band, picking up the same approx 160 sts.
